The Emotion Of Wishful Thinking And Self-Deception
Written by: Pia
Why spend time on thinking about wishful thinking, that is to say a belief that wishes become reality?
Because wishful thinking is one of the most normal emotions coming up for most humans when in stressed situations. We do this because we hope situations in life are different. As a result we end up choosing mistaken beliefs as reality.
For instance, being a former tournament tennis player I have often seen players exercise kind of hallucinations during tennis-competition. A tennis ball a few millimeters out it can easily decide which player wins the match or the championship.
Consequently some players are apt to use wishful thinking especially when the stakes are high.
Vision And Reality
The pursuit of victory and success can make self-deception give you the illusion of truth. You wish things were different but don't know how to change the situation so illusions sometimes is the way to make you feel better.
However, the majority of people performing self-deception don't do this to cheat themselves, others or get specific advantages. But the wish to obtain a specific goal is so big, that delusion just outperforms reality.
Likewise in life, this is how self-deception with distorted facts and fool’s paradise memories turn our life upside down.
Sentences like: It isn’t my fault, I didn’t do that, that isn't what you said, etcetera is also a kind of reality flight.
Decisions And Solutions
Most importantly this can be a disaster in some of life’s most important daily decisions.
For example this is what I one time went through myself .
So I found a solution by examining the wishful thinking I performed around my life’s partner, family, close friends and job. Instead of enjoying all the good abilities every one of them have I was focusing on what I wished was different. That made small decisions concerning family based on the wrong stuff.
I encourage you to try this on yourself. I am sure you’ll find surprising examples when making even small decisions.
So when you catch yourself in wishful thinking make sure you rethink whatever decision you are making and use your common sense.
